The story of how one aircraft manufacturer managed to make a howitzer fly, and why the pilots of the howitzer are required to wear night vision goggles, is not what one might expect. Throughout the 20th century, the US Air Force developed its own understanding of close air support, creating doctrines that allowed for ground units to request attack aircraft via radio.
